Stansted Mountfitchet Parish Council administers two allotment sites in the village. We are responsible for all the admin of the allotments, including inspections taking place five times per year. We also deal with complaints and mediation between tenants.
Elms Farm
The Elms Farm Allotment site was established in 2019 and currently has around 60 plots, including two community plots. The community plots are run by Human Roots and Men’s Shed, Stansted.
Walpole Meadows
The second site at Walpole Meadows has recently been transferred to SMPC from the developers.
Walpole Meadows has 14 plots, and the tenants will be starting their labour of love in March 2025. There is one community plot which will be occupied by Bentfield Primary School.
Applying for an allotment
Any resident interested in an allotment in Stansted can be added to our waiting lists for Elms Farm and Walpole Meadows.
Please email Stansted Mountfitchet Parish Council using the address at the bottom of this page or call the office on 01279 813214 to be added.
Please provide the following information:
Full Name
Address (allotments are only offered to residents of Stansted Mountfitchet)
Email and phone number best to reach you on.
All personal data will be stored by Stansted Mountfitchet Parish Council and will not be shared with other parties unless you agree to share your details with the Allotment Association for your site. We will remove you from the list(s) and delete your personal information upon request.
Please inform us if your contact details change or if you move away from Stansted. Our allotment plots are reserved for residents of Stansted Mountfitchet only.
If you already have a Parish Council allotment plot you are not eligible to go on the waiting list. This is to ensure other interested residents are prioritised.
Due to the length of our waiting lists, you will need to state which allotment site list you wish to be added to. On Elms Farm allotments we have a current wait time of approx. 3 years. It is difficult to predict the number of plots becoming available each year, so this is only an estimate. On Walpole Meadows we expect a similar wait time.
If you are offered a plot, you will be invited to an introduction meeting with a member of our staff and/or a member of the Allotment Association, introducing you to the allotment Tenancy Agreement, showing you the available plot and ensuring that you understand what is expected of all tenants.
Costs
We only offer half plots, approx. 12.5mx10m.
Half plot, annual cost from £50
Some plots are slightly bigger, with a proportionate surcharge.
The annual fee includes water.
There is an initial one-off admin fee of £50
Annual Renewal Process
Each year tenants sign an updated allotment tenancy agreement, accepting any revised terms and conditions. This is required to continue as a tenant. A draft tenancy agreement is sent out to tenants one year in advance.
If you wish to see a copy of the current tenancy agreement, please email SMPC using the address at the bottom of this page.
Complaints
If you have any complaints relating to the allotments, please email or call the office on 01279 813214
Allotment Associations
Elms Farm Allotments Association is a voluntary association working closely with the Parish Council to improve the allotment site. EFAA’s main purpose is to ensure a thriving allotment community and raise any issues with the Parish Council. The EFAA meets quarterly. If you are a tenant of Elms Farm allotments and wish to join the EFAA or have anything to raise, please contact SMPC.
We hope that a similar group will be established at Walpole Meadows once the tenants get allotment life underway
