Recycling Centres

Saffron Walden Recycling Centre

The nearest household waste recycling centre is in Saffron Walden (2UP, Thaxted Road).  The site is operated by Essex County Council. The local authority operates a booking system at their recycling centres.

There is a separate booking system for vans, pick-ups and large trailers at our 9 van-friendly sites. Please check what ECC defines as a van, pick-up or large trailer.

There is no charge to book, but you need to make a booking each time you visit. Please remember, recycling centres only accept household waste.

It opens daily from 9am-4pm. Time slots need to be reserved. Call 0845 603 7625 for more information.

Bishop’s Stortford Refuse Site

Since December 2023 residents wishing to use this facility need to apply to Hertfordshire Councilor a permit when disposing of home waste.

Permits are free, valid for 12 months, and can be applied for at Hertfordshire Council’s website

Essex residents are ineligible to apply a van permit. Vans owners are excluded from the domestic waste permit scheme, which is aimed at household waste.

Permit holders on arriving at a recycling site will have their permit checked and their waste. Operators will turn away suspected commercial, industrial or excessive waste.

The prohibition also includes rubbish from charities and organisations
