General Election 2024 – Key Dates & Info

Since the 2019 General Election, Stansted has been included in a new constituency and new rules for voting have been introduced.

New Constituency

On July 4 electors in Stansted Mountfitchet will be helping to choose their parliamentary representative for the newly established constituency of North West Essex.

This replaces the previous constituency of Saffron Walden. The boundary of North West Essex reaches beyond Uttlesford and includes wards near Chelmsford.

This follows a recent review of constituencies in England by the Boundary Commission. There are now 543 constituencies – up from 533 – in the UK. The increase and boundary changes aims to even up the number of electors in each constituency.

Voting in 2024

New electoral rules are in play in this General Election.

People voting at a polling station need to show an accepted photo ID. Examples include you passport, driving licence (including provisional), local travel passes (older person’s bus pass).

This follows the UK’s departure from the European Union and has been introduced as part of the Elections Act.

Letters are being issued to all EU citizens in the district to either:

  • let them know they are still eligible to vote in local elections
  • tell them they aren’t sure if they are eligible to vote in local elections, and ask them to provide information that will be used to confirm whether they are eligible

EU citizens cannot vote or stand as a candidate in UK Parliament elections.
